“Common” doesn’t always mean “Normal”

Many people ask me why 9 years ago, I decided to start a gluten-free diet. By all accounts, I was quite healthy. But I suffered from recurring headaches, inflammation, stomach aches and other annoying symptoms that all my doctors dismissed as “common”. Eventually I realized that just because something is common, doesn’t mean it’s normal. Here’s a few things to think about:

  1. Mild Headaches. These are pretty easy to ignore or treat with over-the-counter pain killers. But if they happen often, you should ask yourself why. Headaches can be triggered by dehydration, food triggers or other medical reasons.
  2. PMS. That monthly moodiness, irritability, soreness and more might be common, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal. PMS is a symptom of hormonal imbalance and there are ways you can help restore a healthy balance to reduce and elimate these symptoms. Talk to your naturopthic doctor for advice.
  3. Constipation or Loose Stools. Your bowel movements are a good sign of the state of your digestion. Your stools should be well formed, painless and regular. If not, investigate further with your natural healthcare provider who can order tests or recommend detox or elimination diets.
  4. Fatigue or Low Energy. You might chalk it up to age, but the truth is we can all be full of healthy vitality. If you’re getting enough rest every night but still fatigued, think of the reasons why. Some contributing factors can include stress and food allergies.

At the end of the day, we all need to take a very honest look at the state of our health. There’s no reason that we should accept being less than 100% because just because it’s “common”.
